Alphabet

Literacy training for non-Latin script speakers.

Alphabet

"I loved that we were all learning English too, when we were sitting around the table together. I learned lots of alphabet vocabulary, ’letter’, ‘capital’, ‘on the line’. I didn’t know these words before.” Quote from participant

This project provided literacy training to people from non-English language backgrounds. Participants included Ukrainian refugees and people in the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) scheme.

This project developed a workbook to help new arrivals familiarize themselves with a Latin-based script. Five pilot workshops took place in November 2023 in Rathmines Library, Dublin. 10 participants took part, but interest was so high that workshops are likely to run again in 2024.

This project helped learners overcome the exclusion non-EU refugees go through due to a lack of English skills. All participants improved their writing skills and felt more confident to take part in society.
