Leadership for Active Citizenship

Leadership skills for people who return to education.

Group on the Leadership for Active Citizenship programme.

This project helped individuals who returned to education to develop the leadership skills needed to become adult education advocates. Courses took place in the Dublin Adult Learning Centre between September and December 2023.

This project had many beneficial outcomes. Learners built their leadership skills, broadened their understanding of society, and analysed social issues afflicting their communities.

The course also fostered a greater awareness of the learning opportunities available to adults in the area. Hopefully, in time, this awareness will encourage more people to participate in adult education.

Women learners also made connections with the local Garda station. They are now aware of the support systems in place for victims of domestic abuse.

Learning centers throughout Ireland could use course content developed in this project as a template for their own leadership courses in future.

“I found talking amongst each other about life experiences was interesting. Mapping the communities and identifying the services, communities, businesses in the area opened my eyes.” Quote from participant

This project was the result of a collaboration between Dublin City Libraries, the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA), and City of Dublin Education and Training Board (CDETB).
