Learning conversational English through outdoor activities.

Tidy Town group picture

"This project was highly successful in integrating our Ukrainian friends into the community and making them feel welcome and be part of the community.” Quote from facilitator

Tidy Towns and Lough Ree Access for All volunteers helped Ukrainian refugees learn English through weekly outdoor activities.

An outdoor classroom gave 50 learners a chance to improve their English language skills while integrating in the local community. Tidy Town volunteers took Ukrainians out and about in Ballyleague village, while Access for All volunteers organised boat trips on the River Shannon. Failté Isteach tutors ran outdoor classes, ensuring that Ukrainians improved their conversational English.

This project was extremely beneficial for everyone involved. It showed that learners can broaden their knowledge of English in informal settings. Outdoor activities also gave Ukrainian refugees a chance to build friendships with local people and explore new environments.

Participants enjoy a boat trip.

This project was the result of a collaboration between Ballyleague Village Renewal and Tidy Towns, Fáilte Isteach, and Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB).
